Cover: “Gift of the Pari” by Niky Motekallem

About the Art:

Pari are mythological creatures in Persian lore. They are typically depicted as beautiful humanlike beings with feathery wings. I wanted to reimagine them as birds with human faces offering one another stars as they fly in a field of saffron crocuses and jasmine blossoms, two flowers that are very prominent in Iran. I wanted to draw upon the weaving patterns of Persian rugs as well, so I made the image dense with florals. It was my intention to summon the feeling I would have long ago when I visited my relative’s bagh (orchard) and was stunned by the myriad of flowers and birds.

About the Artist:

An Iranian-American illustrator and gallery artist, Niky depicts flora and fauna with intricate lines and bright colors inspired by their Persian Culture. Their work uses symbolism and a personal mythology to communicate deep emotions and celebrate our connections with the natural world. When they aren’t working in the studio, Niky can be found brewing a decadent cup of tea, meandering through antique shops, going on hikes with plant identification guides, or playing D&D with friends.
