In the Artist’s Words:

For this piece, I was inspired a little by Ivan Aivazovsky paintings, in terms of their scale and atmosphere, and the sense of light filtering through the water. I was also thinking about the idea of something colossal and inexplicable seen at sea – like this encounter, if the ship survives, becomes a bit of a myth. Maybe the figure becomes known as a benign omen, credited for the ship surviving the storm, or a vengeful storm goddess, or something else entirely, but that perception has little to do with her. She’s off doing her own thing, unaware or uninterested in humanity.
